Sustainability is a topic that resonates worldwide in many ways. At Kortmann, it is also high on the agenda. Whether it concerns the development of a new depot building or the use of reusable climate-controlled crates, active efforts are being made across various areas to make processes greener and more future-proof.

Since November, intern Summer-Rose has been strengthening our team with a specific sustainability focus: researching opportunities to make packaging materials used in art transport more sustainable. Her work concentrates on softpack solutions for the transport of canvas artworks within the museum sector.

Summer-Rose:
“I am researching how we can implement a more sustainable alternative to softpack in art transportation. Remarkably, relatively little research has been done in this area, even though the desire to live and work more sustainably continues to grow. Through conversations with various professionals in the field, I’ve noticed a strong demand for alternatives to both bubble wrap and smooth plastic. The willingness is there, but the concrete options are still limited at this stage.”

Based on these discussions and her ongoing research, Summer-Rose is currently working on the initial draft of her research report. In the coming months, this will be further developed and refined. The ultimate goal is to create a practical professional output that can contribute to a more sustainable future, not only within Kortmann but potentially across the wider heritage sector as well.
